From Deepfakes to First Aid – WSB University Science Festival in Katowice

In the urban space and within the walls of the University, this is what the Open Day at WSB University in Katowice looked like, organised as part of the 22nd Science Festival. The event once again demonstrated that science can be accessible, relevant, and engaging for young people.

One part of the event took place at Silesia City Center in Katowice, where participants had the opportunity to attend meetings with experts from WSB University. Topics addressed included challenges of the contemporary world – from the growing role of new technologies, through the presence of law in everyday life, to the consequences of decisions made by young people.

Dr Eng. Karol Jędrasiak spoke about the phenomenon of deepfakes and the boundary between fiction and real threat. Attorney-at-law Jarosław Gwizdak explained how law functions within the sphere of popular culture – in games, TV series, and music.
Dr Krzysztof Justyński, Vice-Dean for Education at WSB University, in turn drew attention to the consequences of attitudes and decisions associated with the so-called “YOLO” culture.
At the same time, a second part of the event was held at the WSB University campus in Katowice, where participants could take part in classes and workshops conducted by academic staff and practitioners. The programme included, among others, topics related to law in everyday life, creative solution design in education in the spirit of design thinking, and practical first aid workshops.

The WSB University Science Festival is a recurring initiative aimed at popularising science and presenting research-related topics in an accessible and engaging form. The event also provides an opportunity to showcase the University’s educational offer and to demonstrate what studying at WSB University looks like in practice.
