Safe in Theory and Practice. A Unique Conference for Students at WSB University

How can you safely use an electric scooter, what should you pack in an emergency evacuation backpack, and how should you respond to online hate?

On 18 May, WSB University hosted the educational conference “Safety Zone: Ready for Any Situation”. Nearly 300 students from grades 5–7 from Dąbrowa Górnicza participated in the event organised as part of the Dąbrowa Górnicza Children’s University.

The aim of the meeting was to increase young people’s awareness and develop practical skills in responding to threats – both in the real world and in the digital environment. The programme perfectly combined a solid dose of knowledge with dynamic workshops led by experts from WSB University, representatives of uniformed services, and rescue specialists.

During the lecture and workshop sessions, students had the opportunity to work with experts from various fields:

  • Road and online safety: Sub-Inspector Łukasz Leśny (Municipal Police Headquarters in Dąbrowa Górnicza) discussed traffic regulations for users of scooters, roller skates, and skateboards, while Dr. Eng. Krystian Mączka addressed the topics of cyberbullying, online hate, and privacy protection on the internet.
  • Emergency procedures and evacuation: Prof. Marek Walancik explained the rules for the proper use of emergency numbers, while Second Lieutenant Robert Kora demonstrated how to professionally prepare an evacuation backpack in the event of crisis situations.
  • First aid and self-defence: As part of the practical activities, students of Emergency Medical Services from the Collegium Medicum of WSB University conducted the “Little Rescuer” workshops, while the AWSB Rapid Response Group taught young people the basics of self-defence and threat avoidance.
  • Logical thinking: Dr. Jerzy Gąsiorowski prepared criminal investigation puzzles for the students, in which the analysis of evidence played a key role.

The conference proved that experience is the best form of learning. Thanks to its interactive format, the young participants not only gained theoretical knowledge, but above all practised skills that may one day save health and lives. The event was also an excellent opportunity to promote responsibility and empathy.

The conference was organised jointly with the City of Dąbrowa Górnicza under the honorary patronage of Mayor Marcin Bazylak.
