WSB University Law Students on a Study Visit to the Court of Justice of the European Union
On June 3, 2025, thanks to the initiative of Dr. Aleksandra Klimek-Lakomy – Vice-Dean of WSB University in Dąbrowa Górnicza – the top law students from WSB University participated in an exceptional study visit to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Luxembourg. They were accompanied by attorney Marta Imiołczyk-Porębska and Dr. Marcin Chowaniec – both lecturers at the university.
This visit held both educational and prestigious value, as WSB University was the first Polish university to organize such a comprehensive in-person visit to the CJEU. The agenda was carefully curated and rich in insightful academic and professional experiences.
The day began with attendance at a hearing before the CJEU Grand Chamber in case C-258/23 (Imagens Médicas Integradas), combined with cases C-259/23 and C-260/23. The proceedings addressed key issues related to competition law violations and the seizure of professional legal documents by public authorities, especially in the context of confidentiality of lawyer-client communication and the right to privacy under Article 7 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
Following the hearing, students had the honor of meeting Prof. Maciej Szpunar, First Advocate General of the CJEU. Prof. Szpunar shared his professional experiences and discussed the crucial role of the Advocate General in providing independent and impartial legal analysis to support the decision-making process of the Court.
Next, the group met with Judge Dr. hab. Nina Półtorak, who spoke about her career path, the nature of adjudicating in EU institutions, and the unique challenges of working in a multilingual and multicultural environment.
An especially fascinating part of the visit was a conversation with legal linguist Dorota Schaack, a translator working at the CJEU. She offered students insight into the daily work of translators at the Court, the skills required for the position, and the rigorous recruitment process. The importance of linguistic precision and legal fluency in multiple EU languages was especially emphasized.
During a tour of the CJEU building complex, Paulina Hojny personally guided the group through key areas including the Grand Chamber courtroom and spaces that highlight the symbolic and architectural prestige of the institution. Students learned about the Court’s structure, history, and operational principles.
This unique visit was not only an opportunity to deepen knowledge of EU law but also a chance to engage directly with professionals shaping the European judicial landscape. It affirmed WSB University’s commitment to excellence in legal education and to providing students with rare international learning opportunities.
The event exemplified how WSB University goes beyond academic instruction, offering its students direct access to the highest levels of European legal institutions and preparing them for careers in an increasingly international and interdisciplinary legal environment.
