Sustainability and Social Responsibility at WSB University

Our Commitment to Sustainable Development

At WSB University, sustainability is an integral part of how we educate, conduct research, engage with communities and develop international partnerships. We believe that universities have a responsibility not only to generate and share knowledge but also to actively contribute to addressing the social, economic and environmental challenges facing our world.

Our commitment is guided by the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through education, research, innovation, institutional policies and cooperation with external stakeholders, we work to translate these global ambitions into meaningful actions and tangible benefits for society.

Our Strategic Approach

The Sustainable Development Strategy of WSB University until 2030 provides a framework for integrating sustainability into our institutional development and everyday activities.

While our initiatives contribute to a broad range of Sustainable Development Goals, our strategy identifies seven priority areas:

  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: Promoting inclusive, accessible and innovative learning opportunities and lifelong education.
  • SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Supporting equal opportunities, diversity and inclusive participation in academic and professional life.
  • SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: Strengthening employability, entrepreneurship, responsible leadership and sustainable economic development.
  • SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: Advancing applied research, technological innovation and cooperation between academia and industry.
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Supporting resilient, inclusive and sustainable communities through research, education and civic engagement.
  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: Encouraging resource efficiency, responsible institutional practices and sustainable consumption.
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Building meaningful local, national and international partnerships to accelerate sustainable development.

Our activities also address other important global challenges, including poverty, hunger, health and well-being, reduced inequalities, climate action, and peace, justice and strong institutions.

Turning Commitment into Action

Our approach to sustainable development extends beyond institutional declarations. It is reflected in the work of our academic community, the initiatives we undertake with external partners and the opportunities we create for students, researchers and society.

Education for a Sustainable Future

We prepare students to navigate a rapidly changing world by developing critical thinking, ethical awareness, entrepreneurial skills and the ability to solve complex challenges. Innovative teaching approaches, interdisciplinary learning, international collaboration and practical engagement help students understand sustainability and apply their knowledge in real-life contexts.

Research and Innovation with Social Impact

We promote research that responds to contemporary societal and economic needs. By connecting academic expertise with businesses, public institutions and community organisations, we support knowledge transfer, innovation and evidence-informed solutions to real-world challenges.

Equality, Inclusion and Well-being

We strive to create an academic environment in which people from different backgrounds have opportunities to learn, work and develop. Our activities support equal opportunities, social inclusion, access to education and the well-being of our academic community and wider society.

Environmental Responsibility

We recognise the importance of reducing the environmental impact of university operations. Our efforts include improving resource management, encouraging sustainable mobility, promoting responsible consumption and integrating environmental awareness into education and institutional practices.

Engagement with Communities

As an engaged university, we work closely with local and regional stakeholders to contribute to social and economic development. Through educational initiatives, expert activities and collaborative projects, we seek to strengthen communities and support their long-term resilience.

Partnerships for Global Impact

International cooperation is a key dimension of our sustainability efforts. Through academic networks, collaborative research, educational partnerships and international projects, we exchange knowledge, develop innovative approaches and work with partners to address challenges that extend beyond national borders.

Measuring Our Impact

We believe that meaningful commitment to sustainability requires transparency, continuous improvement and evidence of progress.

WSB University participates in international initiatives and assessment frameworks that help evaluate the impact of universities on society and the environment.

Our contribution to SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities was particularly recognised, placing the University among the world's top 300 institutions in this area. Gender Equality (SDG 5), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17) were also identified as important areas of strength.

Our environmental engagement is also reflected in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which assess universities' commitment to sustainable campus management. Currently WSB University is recognized among 200 the best HEI's in Europe.
