Full-day trip around Kraków

On August 14, volunteers visited Kraków for a full-day trip to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. At the very start of their walk through the Old Town, they had the chance to listen to the famous St. Mary’s Trumpet Call (Hejnał Mariacki), played every hour from the tower of St. Mary’s Basilica – a unique symbol of Kraków. The melody suddenly breaks off mid-tune, commemorating the medieval watchman who warned the city of an incoming Tatar invasion.

The first stop was the Wawel Royal Castle, the historic seat of Polish monarchs. The group explored the royal chambers, richly decorated representative halls, and exhibitions presenting works of art and artifacts connected to Poland’s history. They strolled through the castle courtyards, visited Wawel Cathedral – the site of coronations and royal burials – and admired the famous Sigismund Bell. From the castle walls, they could also enjoy stunning views of the Vistula River.

Next on the itinerary was the Kościuszko Mound, built in the 19th century to honor Tadeusz Kościuszko, a national hero and defender of freedom. Climbing to the top offered breathtaking views of the entire city – from the historic Old Town to the modern districts, with mountain ranges visible on the horizon. The site also houses a museum dedicated to Kościuszko’s life and legacy, adding an educational aspect to the visit.

The day concluded at Zakrzówek Reservoir – a place often described as the “gem of Kraków.” Formed in a former limestone quarry, this turquoise lake is surrounded by steep rocky cliffs and lush greenery. It is one of the most picturesque spots in the city, popular with walkers, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts. A walk around the reservoir and a moment of relaxation in the natural surroundings made for a perfect ending to the busy trip.
