Study visit in Klagenfurt

A study visit by the RESCUER project to Klagenfurt, focusing on mountain tourism for the elderly and people with disabilities, took place from September 30 to October 2, 2024. The event began with an inclusive game aimed at establishing relationships between participants and building trust. This is an important element that fostered openness in discussions on safety and hiking topics.

The second day of the visit was inaugurated by a hike along the region's scenic trails, adapted to the different physical abilities of the participants. Depending on weather conditions, the group split into smaller teams to take part in a shorter or longer route. During the walk, important issues were discussed regarding appropriate hiking equipment, which should be adapted to the needs of the elderly and those with mobility limitations. In the theoretical part, participants were introduced to the development of checklists for planning mountain routes and safety rules. Techniques for navigating difficult terrain were discussed, including the use of poles, with the aim of increasing comfort and safety during hiking.

Practical exercises allowed participants to experience for themselves the effects of different disabilities, which enriched their empathy and understanding of the needs of people who plan similar hikes. An important part of the meeting was a session on first aid and mountain rescue, led by experts from the region. Participants were able to ask questions and share their experiences, which created a space for open discussion about the challenges they face in working with the elderly and disabled. Shared meals fostered integration and the exchange of ideas on best practices in organizing safe mountain tours.

The visit culminated in a summary of the experience and knowledge gained, which will certainly contribute to better organization of future projects and strengthening tourism tailored to the needs of all participants.
