Research findings and publications
How can universities help residents participate in shaping the future of their cities? Research conducted within HEIsCITI explored the links between higher education, civic participation and sustainable urban development. It examined barriers to community engagement, communication between citizens and local authorities, and educational approaches that prepare students to address local challenges.
The research combined surveys, qualitative analysis of students’ reflections and evaluations of pilot activities. Studies explored residents’ motivations and expectations, while course evaluations gathered feedback on the relevance and practical value of the educational materials.
From research to educational practice
The findings informed the development and refinement of the project’s methodology, guidelines and participatory tools. Research on community engagement highlighted the importance of trust, accessible information and clear opportunities for residents to contribute to local decision-making. Studies of teaching practice explored how design thinking and reflective learning could connect academic education with community needs.
WSB University conducted and analysed a pilot-course evaluation involving 100 respondents from different stakeholder groups, including students, educators, local government representatives and community stakeholders. Their feedback provided insights into the quality of the learning activities and opportunities for further development.
