Presentation of the RESCUER project research team at the Interdisciplinary Scientific Conference

During the 3rd Interdisciplinary Scientific Conference "Quality of Life Conditioned by Disability" EVENT WEBSITE , held on December 4th at the WSB Univeristy, the RESCUER project was presented, introducing an innovative approach to ensuring safety for elderly and disabled individuals during mountain expeditions. The project aims to develop a VR (virtual reality) course for mountain rescuers to better understand and prepare for the challenges faced by people with various disabilities in rugged mountain terrain.

During the conference, members of the RESCUER research team extensively discussed various aspects of the project, starting with the safety issues concerning elderly and disabled individuals in mountains. Dr. Ryszard Szynowski, Prof. AWSB, emphasized the importance of preparing mountain rescuers to work with individuals who may have difficulties in mobility, vision, or hearing, and who are increasingly choosing mountain environments. Professor Szynowski noted that virtual simulations are an excellent tool for learning empathy and effectively responding to rescue situations.

Dr. Paweł Buchwald and Mr. Bartłomiej Pawlak presented the potential of VR technology in preparing both seniors and people with disabilities for mountain expeditions. They demonstrated how virtual scenarios can help overcome physical barriers, allowing users to experience challenges associated with different types of disabilities without the need to go into the field. Such training can significantly enhance the safety and comfort of mobility-impaired individuals planning mountain trips. Mr. Bogusław Kanik from the Border Without Barriers Foundation and GOPR discussed practical applications of modern technologies in mountain rescue operations. He highlighted the importance of applying technology in the daily work of rescuers, who must deal with challenges such as difficult terrain, adverse weather conditions, and the need for rapid response in cases involving people with disabilities. Technologies like VR can support rescuers in better preparation for real rescue missions.

Through collaboration among scientific institutions, NGOs, and rescue services from various countries, the RESCUER project has the potential to be a significant step towards safer and more accessible mountain tourism, while promoting the ideals of inclusion and equality in outdoor activities!
