Biogram/Biography

Dr Eduardo Moncada jestem adiunktem na Wydziale Nauk Politycznych w Barnard College na Uniwersytecie Columbia. Jego badania koncentrują się na przestępczości, polityce miejskiej i analizie porównawczej. Większość badań prowadzi w Ameryce Łacińskiej, ale jego zainteresowania dotyczą również budowania nowych teoretycznych, koncepcyjnych i empirycznych powiązań
z podobną dynamiką polityczną w innych regionach świata. Jest autorem kilku monografii oraz kilkunastu artykułów naukowych wydanych w prestiżowych wydawnictwach.

W publikacji pt. „Cities, Business and the Politics of Urban Violence in Latin America” (Stanford University Press, 2016) dr Moncada analizuje i wyjaśnia, w jaki sposób największe miasta rozwijającego się świata reagują na wyzwanie, jakim jest przemoc w miastach. Badanie pokazuje, w jaki sposób projekty polityczne, które miasta podejmują, aby stawić czoła miejskiej przemocy, są kształtowane przez interakcję między miejskimi gospodarkami politycznymi a wzorcami zbrojnej kontroli terytorialnej. Przedstawia biznes jako kluczowego aktora w polityce miejskiej przemocy i argumentuje, że sposób, w jaki biznes jest zorganizowany  w miastach
i jego powiązania z samorządami lokalnymi, wpływa na to, czy biznes wspiera, czy też nie, wysiłki państwa mające na celu powstrzymanie i zapobieganie przemocy w miastach.

Natomiast w swojej najnowszej monografii pt. „Resisting Extortion: Victims, Criminals, and States in Latin America” (Cambridge University Press, 2021), skupił się na powszechnym, jednakże niedostatecznie zbadanym zjawisku wymuszeń przestępczych w Ameryce Łacińskiej, Opierając się na szeroko zakrojonych badaniach terenowych w brutalnych miejscach w Kolumbii, Salwadorze i Meksyku, dr Moncada łączy wywiady, grupy fokusowe
i ćwiczenia rysunkowe z udziałem uczestników, aby wyjaśnić, dlaczego ofiary stosują różne strategie, aby oprzeć się wymuszeniom przestępczym. 

Jest laureatem kilku prestiżowych nagród m.in.:

• Clarence Stone Scholar Award, Urban and Local Politics Section, American Political Science Association (2021)
• Best Paper presented at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Network on the Political Economy of Latin America (REPAL) for “The Political Economy of Resistance to Criminal Extortion in Mexico.” (2019)

Dr Eduardo Moncada I is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University. His research focuses on crime, urban politics and comparative analysis. Most of his research is conducted in Latin America, but his interests also include building new theoretical, conceptual and empirical links with similar political dynamics in other regions of the world. He is the author of several monographs and more than a dozen academic articles published in prestigious publications.
In the publication entitled. "Cities, Business and the Politics of Urban Violence in Latin America" (Stanford University Press, 2016), Dr Moncada analyses and explains how major cities in the developing world are responding to the challenge of urban violence. The study shows how the political projects that cities undertake to confront urban violence are shaped by the interaction between urban political economies and patterns of armed territorial control. It presents business as a key actor in the politics of urban violence and argues that the way business is organised in cities and its links to local governments, affects whether or not business supports state efforts to contain and prevent urban violence.
In contrast, in his latest monograph, entitled. 'Resisting Extortion: Victims, Criminals, and States in Latin America' (Cambridge University Press, 2021), focused on the widespread yet under-researched phenomenon of criminal extortion in Latin America, Drawing on extensive field research in violent locations in Colombia, El Salvador and Mexico, Dr Moncada combines interviews, focus groups and participatory drawing exercises to explain why victims use different strategies to resist criminal extortion.
He is the recipient of several prestigious awards including:
